Large Variety of Pastas
Would We Come Back?
No, the flavors always come up flat, and I've been there enough to stand firm on my decision.
This time, I ordered the bowtie pasta with pumpkin. I would have to say my biggest issue with Acqua is that they undercook the pasta; it takes away from the dish when you are busy trying to get pasta bits out of your teeth. The bowties definitely tasted like pumpkin; it was essentially as if they had pureed a pumpkin and poured it on the pasta. Though it was nice to have that distinct pumpkin flavor, there weren't and other flavors so it tasted kind of bland. it needed more spices and, why the hell not, some more cheese.
We also ordered a meat and cheese plate as an appetizer. The meat was varied and plentiful, but there were only 2 pieces of the same kind of cheese. There were also 2 kinds of bruschetta, which were quite tasty.
Three of my friends ordered a pasta sampler. I've thought of doing this before, but I'm not a huge fan of red sauces, and the chef chooses which pastas after you've ordered. They got the bowties with porcini mushrooms, gnocchi with a gorgonzola sauce (which I've had before), risotto with herbs, pasta with a roasted red pepper sauce, and pasta with a slightly spicy tomato sauce. The gnocchi is very soft; the gorgonzola sauce is perhaps a tad overpowering. The sauce on the risotto was amazing; the rosemary really stood out, one of my favorite herbs. But once again, the risotto was too hard, just like all risotto we have tried in the DC area.
The pasta serving is not very big. If Brad had come, he would have still been very hungry, however, the portion allows me to eat without feeling like death so it is greatly appreciated. The variety and creativity of sauces will keep me coming back, but I am always left a little bit disappointed.
