Hohenzollern

We couldn't believe that Tim and Stephanie had not been to Hohenzollern, especially Stephanie because she used to live fairly close. It was a must see because it was a new experience for all of us.

It sometimes looks like it is floating in the clouds because it sits high above everything else around and the clouds are actually below it. One of the coolest parts of this castle was that it has been rebuilt 3 times at the same location, if I remember correctly. And you can see different parts that are from the older castles.

One of the most interesting things about this castle is that had there been no World Wars and a Monarchy still existed in Germany, this castle and its owners would be the ruling royal family of Germany, and this would still be where they lived. Also on a side note, one of my favorite things was that while touring you have to wear oversized fuzzy shoes so you don't damage the floor. They are so much fun because you can basically ice skate through the castle in these slippery foot coverings! We also, once again, had the tour to ourselves, and the tour guide was very knowledgeable!

The views from atop the hill are great because you are at the highest vantage point around...actually, a hill nearby is slightly taller but we were told that at the time of construction the hill the castle sits on was taller. This being said, you have to park halfway up and either pay for a bus to the top or hoof it. We choose the latter and it really is a workout. It is quite steep and I can imagine not wanting to assault this keep.
We even saw some people walking up/down with ski poles in hand to assist with the walking. It was a little cold, snow on the ground and a bit wet when we were there but if it were better weather I would have loved to hike more. There are lots of trails through the trees and to the top other than the paved one that others were taking full advantage of. Some of the trails however are quite steep and have signs to use them at your own risk. They even had some of the staircases closed because they are too slippery and dangerous in the snow.
